8th GRADE CLASS 2010-2011

Art (Lisa Thomas)- The students will experience a variety of different painting techniques using different types of paints.  They will also be exposed to several unique art forms by studying different artists and their style of art.  A recycled art project will be due in the second semester, guidelines and specifics will be spelled out in great detail in class.  Outside homework will be at a minimum as most projects ware finished in class, but occasional outside work will be necessary.
(supplies: $10 art fee to be paid at Parent Meeting; composition notebook, pocket folder, 4 sharpened pencils.)

History (Janet Rogers)- 1st Semester:  Civil War—from beginning to Gettysburg; 2nd Semester:  Civil war from Gettysurg to the end.
(supplies:  $3 copy fee to be paid at Parent Meeting; folder with pockets, pen and/or pencil, colored pencils, ruler, small glue, pencil sharpener, plastic bag to hold)

Oral Presentation (Rachel Lee) - Students will become familiar with the types of speech by presenting and becoming more comfortable in front of their classmates, giving them a jump-start for their required high school course. (supplies: any typenotebook with pockets, loose-leaf paper, pencil, props for various speeches)

Science (Lyn Gladden)- We will be studying astronomy and earth science. Earth science will be the main focus of the first semester. We will classify rocks and study earth forms. We will also begin to use a planisphere to identify constellations in the fall and winter evening sky. Astronomy will be the main focus of the second semester. We will learn more about the other planets in our solar system, and we will study deep space objects and astro-physic theories. There will be an opportunity to go to the Episphere in April. Students will be expected to take notes and complete homework. There will be occasional quizzes, a project, a report, occasional homework, and students will also need to practice star and planet identification as it is taught in class. (supplies: $7 supply fee for planisphere - to be ordered by Academy, any notebook and a pen or pencil)

Writing (Nancy Wheeler)- This class will focus on creative writing all year.  In the fall we will be writing tall tales, fables, folk tales, and poetry.  In the spring we will be writing fractured fairy tales and talking about the elements of a good story.(supplies: Bound composition book, notebook (3 ring or spiral), 2 pocket folder)

Report cards will be given for each semester for grades 3-12. Students are assigned grades based on class work, homework, class participation and tests. Students enrolling in 8th grade classes must attend for the entire day.
