8th GRADE CLASS (2008-2009)
Art (Lisa Thomas)-Students will be learning art from around the world. Famous artist and their most important works. They will also be exposed to different types of art mediums as well as a few seasonal projects . (supplies: $10 art fee to be paid at Parent Meeting; 2 composition notebooks -one for each semester; 1 pkg. colored pencils (at least 12 can be larger for more range); 1 small pencil sharpener; 2 or 3 sharpened pencils)
*All supplies should be available to use each week
** may want to purchase a small bag or some item to store smaller objects
History (Janet Rogers)- 1st Semester: Czars of Russia from Ivan the Terrible to Nichols 2nd; 2nd Semester: Plains Indians. (supplies: $5 copy fee to be paid at Parent Meeting; folder with pockets, pen and/or pencil, colored pencils, ruler, small glue, pencil sharpener, plastic bag to hold)
Oral Presentation (Josie Upson)- Using Creative Communications by Fran Averett Tanner as our guide, our goal is simply to help each student gain more experience before they participate in the required high school class. Students will be exposed to several types of speeches as they brainstorm, plan, and present each speech to their peers. (supplies: notebook (any type) with pockets, looseleaf paper, pencil, props for various speeches)
Science (Lyn Gladden)- We will be studying earth science and astronomy. Earth science will be the main focus of the first semester. We will classify rocks and study earth forms. Astronomy will be the main focus of the second semester. However; in order to take advantage of some planetary/ astronomical viewing opportunities, there will be some astronomy mixed into the first semester. Students will be expected to take notes and complete homework. There will be occasional quizzes. Students will also need to practice star and planet identification as it is taught in class. (supplies: $5 copy fee; any notebook and a pen or pencil)
Writing (Nancy Wheeler)- 8th grade writing will take flights of fancy. We will start with Folktales, Fables, and Tall Tales. We will also study some poetry. Then in the second semester, we will be creating Fractured Fairy Tales and all the elements that go into a good story. (supplies: Bound composition book, notebook (3 ring or spiral), 2 pocket folder)
Report cards will be given for each semester for grades 3-12. Students are assigned grades based on class work, homework, class participation and tests. Students enrolling in 8th grade classes must attend for the entire day.
