Homeschooling

Our members are current homeschoolers. Homeschooling is an educational choice in which the parent/guardian takes both the practical and legal responsibility for their child's education. This responsibility includes curriculum selection, teaching the student, assigning grades, etc. A homeschooler in Arkansas will have submitted a Homeschool Intent Form. Any student who is participating in an educational option in which a Homeschool Intent Form is not required is not considered a homeschooler.

Homeschooling has been legal in Arkansas since 1985. The law has changed over time and will probably continue to change.

In order to homeschool you need to:

  • Determine your teaching approach and materials that you will use (these materials are called "curriculum")
  • Locate and obtain new or used textbooks and materials for your teaching.
  • Fill out a Notice of Intent to Home School and submit it to your local school superintendent's office.
  • Fill out a Waiver (releasing the state from liability for your children's education) and submit it to your local school superintendent's office.

Your child will be tested with a standardized test in accordance with state law. You should stay familiar with current laws and information from your school district which address ages for testing and locations of testing sites.

See our Resources page for helpful information - including information on Intent Forms, Curriculum, Special Needs, Testing, and more.
